Bassoon Concerto

World Premiere: 2027

Instrumentation: bassoon & large ensemble

Duration: c. 15-20 minutes

Dai Fujikura's Sho Concerto, lauded by The Telegraph as “bewitching” and “magical”, linking East with West, ancient tradition with modernity, has had splendid success under the baton of Kazuki Yamada.

Its Birmingham world premiere was broadcast by BBC’s New Music Show, and its sold-out Tokyo Opera City performance drew national coverage in Japan's The Nikkei newspaper.

Fujikura's Secret Forest set our bassoon player right in the midst of the audience. Now, Dai wants to rewrite his Bassoon Concerto for Nikolaj Henriques and BCMG.

He says about this next Sound Investment (a co-commission with the Sumitomo Life Welfare and Culture Foundation): “what seems like an exercise in instrumentation often does require far more work, and inspiration, than simply inventing something new”.

We couldn’t be more curious.
